This is not actually my book; it is certainly not my story, but it was nonetheless an honour to be asked by the Sisterhood of St. John the Divine in Toronto to help them create a book to mark the community’s 130th anniversary.
SSJD is the oldest, and most enduring of Canada’s religious homes. During the course of researching and writing this book, I learned a great deal about the Sisters’ history, their work and care with society’s most vulnerable, and their laudable legacy in the field of rehabilitation health care. As much as society tries to trivialise or demonise the work of nuns, the more you learn about them the more you come to see that they are far from some anachronistic cliché. They have evolved like the rest of us, and now—even as SSJD continues to grow and attract new members—this is a community whose current mission is largely to help restore the spiritual equilibrium of ordinary folk, like you and me.
